Are you dry brushing, staining or other?
First I stain the wood with chalk and isopropyl alcohol and when everything is dry, with a dry brush (but not very dry) I apply the paint. Before the paint dries, with adhesive tape I remove paint and it makes a very interesting chipping effect.
